For our media we first had to decide on a genre in order to base a film opening on. We worked in a group of three and decided to base our opening on Thriller. On this page is my research I've done into thrillers .I've looked at types of thriller ,films and analysed them and also looked a Alfred Hitchcock a famous director in order to help us come up with a narrative for our opening. This research will give me ideas of what to include in our opening and typical thriller conventions.
A thriller is usually a novel, play or film that's has an exciting plot most of the time involving crime, spies and mysteries.
Below is a mind map of Existing Thriller Films and What the typical conventions are:
![]() |
Types of Thrillers Include:
- Action Thriller- This is normally a large part of action that appears in a thriller. It is normally fast pace , includes violent scenes and has an element of mystery. An example of a film in this genre is Taken.
- Disaster Thriller -Where the main conflict in the film is due to a artificial or natural disaster. These include hurricanes ,volcanic eruptions, earth quakes etc. An example of this is The Day After Tomorrow.
- Erotic Thriller-This is a mix between thriller and a erotica
- Psychological Thriller- This focuses on the mental and emotional side rather than the physical of the character/s. An example of this is paranormal activity.
- Crime Thriller-This normally included either a successful or failed crime that's been committed. It often includes robberies, murders, kidnapping ,guns etc. An example of this is Silence of the Lambs.
Below are three film analysis of already existing thriller. I've looked at the typical thriller conventions they have used and how they made it a successful thriller film. These will all help me to create an idea for our thriller opening.
Analysis of Gone
Below is a mood board of what a typical thriller includes. I have also included character and thriller films in order get a general idea of what we should included in our thriller.
Thriller Success
The
table below shows the most successful thrillers according to the box office.
The films with a red star next to show the thrillers that include the genre of crime. Which is 9/19, showing that
crime is a popular and successful sub-genre. Specifically due to 3 are in the
top 5.
This table shows what the top thrillers were in 2014. This shows
that thrillers are still very successful and are ranging a lot to suit
different target audiences. For example, The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner
are all aimed towards middle teenagers.

Target Audience
In order to get an general idea of what we should include in our thrillers , we conducted a questionnaire which can be shown below.
Below is an example of someones response to our questionnaire. This person is a good example of what we believe our target audience would be like.We can use this questionnaire to help us consider what we can include in our production to make it more appealing to our audience.
Below are charts of our results we receive after conducting our questionnaire. This helps give us an indication of who we are aiming our production at and conventions we could include.
What gender are you ?
What is your favourite film genre?
How often do you watch films:?
How important is sound when trying to build tension?
What point of view would you like the production to be from ?
After conducing our questionnaire this expanded our knowledge on what we need to include in our thriller in order to make it effective and eye catching towards our target audience .
We conclude from our research that our target audience would be people aged between 16-25.Below are two profiles of what we believe our target audience would be like if they were to watch our production.
Existing Audiences:
This diagram shows that the age groups of 15-24 (our target audience range) is the most likely age group to attend the cinema. Even though the numbers are dropping, for a few reasons the table below suggests, the age group is still one of the dominating. This allows us to understand that producing something towards that age group will be successful as they are the most likely to actually view films in the cinemaThe diagram above shows how our target audience watch films. The most common ways being: Dvd, TV and cinema. This group is also the most likely to watch a film online, on websites such as Netflix - as its easier and suits the lifestyle of our target audience. Again, this also highlights to us that targeting our production towards this age group is worthwhile due to the numerous ways in which they prefer to watch films.
Tribal Groups
After gathering information from our target audiences through questionnaires we decided to take a further look in more detail in the different groups there are. Below is a prezi in which show's the different tribal groups there are and how we can attract them to watch our opening.
Typical Order Of Titles
After researching into thrillers we decided to base our production opening around the idea of identity fraud. Below is some research into what identity fraud is and existing films based on this.
